TV: The Walkthrough: Adam Reed walks us through Archer’s third season (Part 1 of 3)

TV: The Walkthrough: Adam Reed walks us through Archer’s third season (Part 1 of 3)

In its third season, FX’s animated comedy Archer hit new heights of lunacy and climbed in the ratings. The season began with a three-part episode—which aired in the fall after episodes of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia—then played out the rest of its season in the winter. Throughout the season, the show dug even deeper into its characters, offered up a number of great spy missions (including one in space), and forced lead character Sterling Archer into increasingly depraved situations, not that he seemed to mind much. Along the way, Cyril Figgis became a field agent, Archer hooked up with Pam, and Archer’s mother Malory murdered the prime minister of Italy. Series creator Adam Reed—who’s had at least partial script credit on every episode of the show—recently talked with The A.V. Club about the process of working on all season-three episodes ...

Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost getting the apocalyptic band back together for The World's End

Film: Newswire: Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost getting the apocalyptic band back together for The World's End

After years of working separately but not always equally, Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost are finally set to reunite on The World's End, the promised capper to the super-bloke trilogy launched by Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. As with those films, World's End concerns some immature every-dudes clinging stubbornly to their stunted ways amid ominous circumstance—in this case, old drinking buddies whose epic pub crawl unfortunately coincides with the apocalypse that is hitting approximately half of the movies over the next year or so, because obviously we've all got something on our minds. Deadline reports that it's expected to shoot in September with an eye on release in the spring of 2013, at which point Wright can resume fielding questions about and/or working on the equally long-promised Ant-Man for Marvel, provided he's not saved by the bell of the ...

A thing I did in high school

A thing I did in high school

I remember a lot of people telling me that someday I’d regret not taking the SAT in high school and I’d regret not engaging in school and I’d look back and wish I’d at least attended my college graduation, but you know what? fuck that noise. I’m perfectly, some might even say smugly, satisfied with the way I handled everything. I find it dubious that a solid education would have helped me write fart jokes any more eloquently than I already do.

oh, right, PS: I just got back from Spain where I debuted this book and then I did things. Many thanks to Alter Comics and 30 Salon Barcelona.

What Do Limp Wrists Have To Do With Gay Men?

What Do Limp Wrists Have To Do With Gay Men?

After encouraging fathers to “punch” sons who exhibit stereotypically gay behavior, North Carolina pastor Sean Harris said on Tuesday that he should have chosen different words. In his April 28 sermon, Harris said, “Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist.” Why do we associate a limp wrist with male homosexuality?

Danny Elfman on his long collaboration with Tim Burton

Film: Interview: Dark Shadows composer Danny Elfman on his long collaboration with Tim Burton

From 1972 through 1995, Danny Elfman was best known to music fans for his work with the band Oingo Boingo and its precursor, The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo. Nowadays, however, his name is most often associated with his work in the field of film and television scores, including a long-running collaboration with Tim Burton that extends to the new Dark Shadows. The A.V. Club spoke to Elfman about his writing process and the methodology required to collaborate with Burton, as well as the legacy of Oingo Boingo and why he’s happier in dark rooms than on concert stages.
The A.V. Club: Your collaboration with Tim Burton stretches back to Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. How did the two of you first come to work together?
Danny Elfman: Well, it really was out of the blue on Pee-wee. I got a call from the manager of [Oingo ...

How Much MacBook Air Can You Get for $800?

I don't know if this rumor is true, considering iPads go up to $830.  I don't think they'd want that price overlap.

How Much MacBook Air Can You Get for $800?

In order to compete with PC manufacturers selling inexpensive Windows ultrabooks, Apple is primed to release a lower-priced, $800 MacBook Air in Q3 -- immediately begging the question, 'What will you actually get for your low cost of entry?'

Filling the Canals: 1927

Filling the Canals: 1927

By 1925 the roads, water and sewage systems of Venice of America badly needed repair and expansion to keep up with its growing population. It was proposed that Venice be annexed to Los Angeles. While those for and against annexation were nearly evenly matched, a recent influx of LA residents, who moved to Venice to vote, turned the tide. Venice became part of Los Angeles in November 1925.

Los Angeles had annexed the Disneyland of its day, and proceeded to remake Venice in its own image. It was felt that the town needed more streets, not canals, and most of them were paved in 1929 after a three-year court battle led by canal residents.

The Simpsons (Classic), “Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie”

Damn, do I miss Classic Simpsons...

TV: TV Club: The Simpsons (Classic), “Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie”

“Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie” (season 4, episode 5; originally aired 11/03/1992)
The cultural consensus that surrounds a truly big event movie is inherently exciting. We live in an increasingly fractured and niche-oriented universe, but every once in a while a film comes along whose appeal transcends all demographics and barriers, a film everyone simply must see.
The Avengers is such a film, as is its comic book peer The Dark Knight Rises. The Star Wars prequels were unusually pure examples of this curious breed, as was Avatar. But all these films pale in comparison to the greatest event movie of all time: The Itchy & Scratchy Movie. It’s difficult to watch “Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie” now and not think of another massive event movie from a little while back called The Simpsons Movie. Say what you will about The Simpsons Movie, it’s impossible to deny the culture-wide ...
