Tar Pit Tour: The Ice Age Miracle From Miracle Mile

For more than a century, scientists have excavated fossils from the La Brea tar pits. It's a paleontological treasure chest, a snapshot of the late Pleistocene and Ice Age California. That picture is growing sharper by the day as paleontologists dig into Project 23, a huge cache uncovered almost six years ago during the construction of what would become a parking garage.

Why it’s still important for bands to do well on Saturday Night Live

For Our Consideration: Why it’s still important for bands to do well on Saturday Night Live

In case you missed it, Saturday Night Live is relevant again. I don’t mean that it’s back to being funny, though that’s occasionally been true this season. (Granted, I’m a sucker for sketches where Fred Armisen impersonates Barack Obama impersonating how Bill Cosby makes a hoagie.) I’m referring to the show’s musical offerings, which have been consistently generating headlines lately, though not necessarily for positive reasons. It’s not supposed to be this way: In the age of YouTube and an overabundance of music websites offering original video content, a 37-year-old TV show on ...

Spanish Visitor Rescues Elderly Man Who Jumped Off Venice Pier

Spanish Visitor Rescues Elderly Man Who Jumped Off Venice Pier Jonathan LePage, a visitor from Spain, helps rescue an elderly man who jumped off the Venice Pier on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012.

An elderly man who jumped from the Venice Pier on Wednesday morning was rescued with the help of a Spanish visitor who leaped into the ocean to save him.

The man jumped about 9:28 a.m. as a group of people were admiring the 440-foot luxury yacht Serene anchored off Venice Beach, said Dan Pepper, an eyewitness at the scene. Pepper said he and Spanish visitor Jonathan LePage came up with a plan that called for LePage to strip down to his boxer shorts and jump in after the man, while Pepper would take responsibility for calling 911.

A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter and two LAPD patrol cars responded to the pier and helped coordinate efforts with the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguard Division, Pepper said

The man was pulled from the water about 9:37 a.m. and was taken to a hospital for examination, a lifeguard dispatcher said.

Pepper said LePage showed signs of hypothermia and was shaking wildly under blankets after the rescue. LePage and his friends from Fresno were in Los Angeles to attend the taping of ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! show Thursday.
