You May Have Been Born to Flock

You May Have Been Born to Flock

More than 70,000 people will flood into the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans this Superbowl weekend, while thousands more swarm through the city's French Quarter. From a certain perspective, might those football fans resemble, say, a herd of wildebeest or school of fish? Or maybe a murmuration of starlings? Some scientists think the essential components of flocking behavior, an instinctive tendency to join with others and follow their lead, remain alive inside us.

Return Of The Living Dead thumbs its nose at traditional zombie lore

How The Return Of The Living Dead thumbs its nose at traditional zombie lore

The Return Of The Living Dead (1985) John Russo co-wrote the original Night Of The Living Dead movie with George Romero, and retained the rights to the “living dead” title, which he used in his 1977 novel Return Of The Living Dead (set a decade after the zombie plague of the original film), intending to create his own franchise. Russo got his wish, though not exactly in the way he intended. The Return Of The Living Dead project fell into the hands of Dan O’Bannon, a sci-fi/horror writer whose twisted sense of humor—first widely seen in his collaboration with John Carpenter on the wacky outer-space creature-feature Dark Star—had already made him a favorite among genre fans. O’Bannon’s The Return ...

Vintage Los Angeles: Touch of Evil

From the always wonderful (bookmark it!) Vintage Los Angeles:

The view looking East along Windward Avenue – Venice's gateway to the beach. The cross st. is Ocean Front Walk aka The Boardwalk. The hotel in the foreground is the old St. Marks which was torn down in the 60s. The next bldg. down with the Chop Suey sign is now Danny's.

Video: the opening sequence of "A Touch of Evil", directed by Orson Welles, was shot in Venice, California to double for Los Robles, a Mexican border town because the place looked convincingly run-down and decayed in this legendary three-minute shot.

The worlds of Breaking Bad and Malcolm In The Middle are finally colliding

The worlds of Breaking Bad and Malcolm In The Middle are finally colliding

In a move that is sure to rile up the "Breaking Bad is just a sequel to Malcolm In The Middle" crowd on the Internet, distracting them from whatever important work they were going to do today, Malcolm star Jane Kaczmarek confirmed she'll join her erstwhile TV husband in the remaining hours of his newer series. Kaczmarek's Sunday night announcement backed up some other recent evidence, including an IMDB listing that has her appearing in the 11th and 12th episodes, and the above photo (captioned "Hankum In The Middle") tweeted by Dean Norris.

However, today Vulture attempted to quash the story, before it caused everyone to question their own reality, quoting "a source at the show" who says Kaczmarek's appearance will only be for the DVD extras, not in the actual episodes. But clearly that's all just a diversion from the show's real plan to ...

Are You Eating What You Think You’re Eating?

Are You Eating What You Think You’re Eating?

Steve Palumbi has a few rules when it comes to sushi. If something is labeled tuna, then it probably is, but stay away from the salmon, because it probably isn’t. More likely, it’s steelhead trout—a close relative of salmon, both of which start life in freshwater, migrate to the sea, and return to their natal stream to breed and die. But still: a trout. Shrimp is shrimp and crab is crab, unless it’s pollock. And don’t trust the white fish. That could be anything: tilapia, something else, who knows.
