Culver City’s Royal/T To Close at the End of August

Culver City’s Royal/T To Close at the End of AugustRoyal/T Cafe head maid Yuu Asakura serves up meals and works events while enhancing her performance skills.

The funky, eclectic Royal/T Japanese art space and cafĂ©, complete with waitresses dressed like Japanese maids/ Alice in Wonderland, will disappearing down the rabbit hole by summer’s end.
Following a report  Thursday on Eater L.A., where a Royal/T employee told the publication that the Culver City haunt will be shutting shop when its lease is up at the end of August, Patch contacted Royal/T's PR representatives Friday morning to try and confirm the rumors.
Following that call we received this press release from Royal/T owner Susan Hancock:
Throughout the past 5 years in Culver City, Royal/T has always evolved by working with new artists, chefs and brands. Although  Royal/T's Culver City location will be closing after 5 amazing years, this moment marks an exciting time for an expansion on what Royal T has always done.  Royal T will be announcing in the near future an upcoming series of roaming special events, exhibits, shows, brand partnerships, and pop-ups in Los Angeles and around the world, so please stay tuned.

We are excited to celebrate with you in our final months in Culver City with “The Art of Cooking" exhibition opening on Friday, April 27.

Some of the best anime you'll see all year is a 40-second commercial for Tokyo Disney

Tokyo Disney commercial

This charming little commercial the Tokyo Disney Resort started airing about a month ago and has begun to get some traction among anime aficionados on the Internet. As Twitch columnist Hugo Ozman explains, it encapsulates “the life story of a little girl in 40 seconds,” with a special emphasis on how all the happiest moments at the various stages of her existence have some connection to the place that Walt built. (Apparently the Disney-loving character is named Yumeno Maihama and shares a birthday with Mickey Mouse.) Check it out and bask in the latest proof, as if any were needed, that the best way to recapture the innocent, imaginative spirit of early Disney is to call some guys in Japan.

Film: The New Cult Canon: Hackers may have been of its time, but it was also ahead of it

“This is our world now… The world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud.” —Loyd Blankenship (a.k.a. The Mentor), “The Conscience Of A Hacker”

The mid-’90s were a rough time for filmmakers—or for cultural commentators of any kind, really—to speculate about the Internet and where it was going both technologically and socially. Would we wander through the Internet somehow, playing spy games in the virtual reality of Disclosure, with its pointless architecture and cumbersome data mitts? Would ordering a pizza online turn us into flannel-ensconced shut-ins like it does Sandra Bullock ...

Sweden’s New Gender-Neutral Pronoun: Hen

Sweden's New Gender-Neutral Pronoun:

Hen

By most people's standards, Sweden is a paradise for liberated women. It has the highest proportion of working women in the world, and women earn about two-thirds of all degrees. Standard parental leave runs at 480 days, and 60 of those days are reserved exclusively for dads, causing some to credit the country with forging the way for a new kind of nurturing masculinity. In 2010, the World Economic Forum designated Sweden as the most gender-equal country in the world.

Tim Burton and Seth Grahame-Smith are probably making a stop-motion monster movie together

Film: Newswire: Tim Burton and Seth Grahame-Smith are probably making a stop-motion monster movie together

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter scribe Seth Grahame-Smith recently took time out of his busy schedule of doodling werewolves in Dickens novels (or whatever) to talk to The Hollywood Reporter, where he confirmed what many have suspected: He and Burton are developing an inseparability that threatens to usurp all those knee-jerk “Johnny Depp” jokes. And in addition to having Burton produce the film adaptation of Lincoln, writing the script for Burton’s Dark Shadows, and being attached to draft that promised Beetlejuice sequel, Grahame-Smith says he’s also working on entering another one of Burton’s well-worn areas with the “stop-motion ...
