Look! Up in the Sky! It's 'Supermoon'!
Look! Up in the Sky! It's 'Supermoon'!
A "supermoon" will rise over the Southland Saturday night, and will be 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of 2012, according to Dr. James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, who explains the phenomenon on NASA's website.
A "supermoon"—a term coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979—occurs when the moon's orbit reaches its closest point to the earth. This moon will be extra super, though, because it will also be "gloriously full" at the same time, Garvin said (Watch the video above).
A Wikipedia item says the term supermoon "is not widely accepted or used within the astronomy or scientific community, who prefer the term perigee-syzygy." But who wants to try pronouncing that?
The best time to photograph a supermoon is when the planet is low on the earth's horizon.
"For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects," Garvin said.
Before you get too excited, though, be aware that the difference between this supermoon and other full moons may not be particularly discernable to the casual observer.
Dr. Ed Krupp of the Griffith Observatory spoke about the phenomenon on CBS's KNX 1070 Newsradio. Krupp said that the moon will not look that much different than normal.
“It is a little closer, it is a little brighter, but the eye is really not able to detect the difference,” Krupp said.
If you're planning on hosting a lunar viewing party, start looking to the horizon for “a pretty spectacular moonrise,” said Anthony Cook, an astronomical observer at the Griffith Observatory. The moon actually won't become totally full until 8:35 p.m., he said, and it then will be perigee, or super, at 8:40 p.m.
If you would like to see the supermoon with an unobscured view, Griffith Observatory is open to the public until 10 p.m. Saturday, with telescopes available until 9:30 p.m. The telescopes will also be available to see Saturn’s rings.
Cloudless skies are best for viewing, of course. The skies above Venice-Mar Vista will be partly clear Saturday night with fog expected after 11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Happy moongazing!

The Lego version of the Game Of Thrones intro is pretty much exactly what you expect it to be
TV: Great Job, Internet!: The Lego version of the Game Of Thrones intro is pretty much exactly what you expect it to be
Oh look! Someone made a Lego version of the Game Of Thrones opening credits! Because this is the year 2012, and wishes you didn't know you had are granted. It's downright heartwarming, even. But look: It's really neat how this video uses stop-motion technology (and not in a depressing Ben from Parks And Recreation way) to capture the inner-workings-of-a-watch essence of the original credits, but would it have killed them to use the actual music from the opening? Because the version they use is what the karaoke version would sound like if Sunfly was trying to get around having to pay the original artist. For best enjoyment, turn the sound off and sync with the second embedded video Dark Side Of The Moon-style.

The Puppet Department Gets Poetic
The Puppet Department Gets Poetic
In an effort to express our undying affection for the job we do, the entire puppet team here at Robot Chicken have pieced together a poem.
And now, a little something we like to call…
An Ode to Puppets
Oh, puppet…with skin so fair
I didn’t know you could bend there
Conjuring strange creatures that lurk in dark stages
Ready for the light, tiny parts glued, popped into place
An amalgam of voices, blood, emotions, music, hands, decisions, failures – a humble retelling
Big room with medium sized people…making small people pose
Through our own perceptions we replicate existence
I tenderly patch the holes I so carelessly drilled through your head
Pins and lollipops this silicone’s eveverywhere
Thy beginning was but a flicker of light in the maker’s eye
Thy creation, full of toil with oft a curse flung to the wind
But thy life…
Thy life shall bring delight
Thy life shall fill a void
Thy life shall be our life
Give and stitch and bend and paint, what a happy life we live
That moment when you drill too far into the puppet’s head…

There are other unscripted shows in the works—the Nigel Lythgoe-produced Opening Act, in which amateurs are surprised with the chance to open for superstars; Married To Jonas, in which viewers are surprised to discover that someone made a reality show about the eldest Jonas Brother—and, for the first time, a huge slate of scripted shows with plots that go beyond orchestrating weddings as publicity stunts.

Joe Pantoliano: Asylum: Hollywood Tales From My Great Depression
Books: Book Review: Asylum: Hollywood Tales From My Great Depression
The stated primary purpose of Joe Pantoliano’s second memoir, Asylum: Hollywood Tales From My Great Depression—Brain Dis-ease, Recovery, And Being My Mother’s Son is “to eliminate the shame” for anyone afraid to admit they have a mental problem and need professional help. The character actor known for roles from The Goonies to The Sopranos states that his clinical-depression diagnosis puts him in the same category as Lincoln (“That’s why Lincoln’s words made me happy. I recognized myself in them”) and “our greatest actors.” After listing famous fellow sufferers, Pantoliano says “I could feel myself in them, in their pain,” obliterating the distinction between offering himself as a relatable survivor for people with mental problems, and simple self-aggrandizement.
In spite of those putatively noble intentions, much of Asylum is stream-of-consciousness memoir, peppered with anecdotes both interesting (Pantoliano’s early industry days, being mentored by Robert Wagner ...

Doctor Druid, D-Man... Assemble!: 18+ Avengers unlikely to show up in the movie
Books: Inventory: Doctor Druid, D-Man... Assemble!: 18+ Avengers unlikely to show up in the movie
1. Doctor DruidIs Hollywood ready for an openly pagan superhero? Probably not. Which is a bit of a shame; while never an A-list Avenger, Doctor Druid had a long and respectable run in various comics titles, dating back to some Jack Kirby- and Steve Ditko-drawn stories that predated the first issue of The Fantastic Four. The mysterious, occult-fueled adventurer filled a Doctor Strange-shaped void in the team during his ’80s tenure. That said, Druid is just a little too odd of a hero to cut it nowadays, a reminder of a weirder, funkier superhero era. Unless Marvel was thinking of recasting J.K. Simmons as an Avenger, it’s hard to picture Doctor Druid finding a place in the sexy, big-screen team.
