The rules are different on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Eve, binge drinking isn’t just accepted, but actively encouraged. Hell, in some places it isn’t just actively encouraged; it’s angrily demanded. Sobriety, caution, and self-restraint suddenly become the exclusive province of fuddy-duddies, killjoys, and teetotalers out to destroy everyone’s buzz with their L-7 lameness. On New Year’s Eve, everyone of drinking age is expected to get wasted and exercise terrible judgment, quite possibly with the stranger they’re expected to sloppily exchange saliva with as the clock strikes midnight, lest they be considered a hopeless wallflower or dateless wonder by their friends.
