So the same guys who buried it are the guys who dug it up?  I don't think that qualifies as a prank.  Why not leave it there for someone else to discover, possibly years from now?

A couple of dudes punked Venice Beach by planting a fake treasure chest under the cover of night and returning the next day pretending to strike gold.

It looks like they got they got the crowd pretty good.
