Books: The Catch-Up: Y: The Last Man

In The Catch-Up, a longtime fan and a newcomer have a discussion about a TV show, movie, book, music, or other pop-culture item. In this installment, Noel Murray and Oliver Sava kick around Y: The Last Man, the acclaimed science fiction/action comic-book series that considers what would happen if a mysterious malady wiped out every male on Earth, save for one escape artist and his monkey.
Noel: Oliver, I’d read the first trade paperback of Y: The Last Man back when it was first released, but never went any further than that, because while I liked the first ...

Christmas Trees Repurposed as Protection for Fishies When you think of recycling your Christmas tree, perhaps you don't first think of how it might help out your local water-dwelling creatures. But if so, you are remiss; this year, the Riverside County Waste Management Department and the California Department of Fish and Game are working together to turn your former ornament-hanger into a habitat for small fish. Christmas of yore pt 2

Christmas of yore pt 2

hey New York, come to the Crimestoppers Club show next Tuesday to watch some of us do whatever it is we do. Guests are Kate Beaton, Michael Kupperman, Anthony Devito, Mitch Magee, Mark Twain, Julie Klausner and myself. Dec 27th 7pm @Luca Lounge. And now here's two more old Christmas comics made in 2005:

Why Don't They Sell Eggnog Year-Round?

Sales of eggnog have quadrupled in the last 50 years, yet eggnog is widely available only two months out of the year. Noted libertarian Homer J. Simpson blames the government for its sudden disappearance. Why don't dairy manufacturers make eggnog all year long?

Christmas of yore pt 1

Christmas of yore pt 1

for the next few days I’m going to run some old comic about Christmas that I made many years ago. Some of them appear in Fart Party vol 1 and some of them I just didn’t do anything with. It’s weird for me to look at these old drawings because they’re pretty hilariously bad but that was a good time in my life so, there’s that. You know, now that I’m old as balls and everything is shitty. hahaha I’m only half kidding, I’m still young. Enjoy!

Snow Globe Los Angeles

Snow Globe Los Angeles

From All Cut Up Films via CurbedLA:

Just in time for the holidays! "Snow Globe Los Angeles" is a short time-lapse film that captures the city of L.A. during the holiday season.

"Snow Globe Los Angeles" was created using over 4000 still images shot on a custom built camera rig. The effect was achieved using a Canon 5D MII, a homemade tilt-shift style lens, a light bulb filled with water, and paper cut outs to create shaped bokeh.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

A nerdy nation wonders what Kim Jong Il's death means for 30 Rock

TV: Newswire: A nerdy nation wonders what Kim Jong Il's death means for 30 Rock

As soon as it was revealed that North Korea’s dear leader Kim Jong Il had at last evolved beyond the human realm and assumed glorious reign over Heaven, where he’s already beaten everyone at golf, the nation immediately began asking itself about the ramifications his promotion held for us—namely, what’s going to happen on 30 Rock now? After all, the last we saw of Elizabeth Banks’ Avery Jessup, she had been kidnapped while on assignment and married off to son and successor Kim Jong Un, sentenced to a life of sunflower picking and eating enough food ...

1. Raising Hope, “It’s A Hopeful Life” (2011)
Though it took some time for It’s A Wonderful Life to become the seasonal staple it is today, Frank Capra’s 1946 film serves dual purposes in TV land. One, it reliably fills in a few two-hour programming holes around Christmastime; two, its most famous sequence—where destitute protagonist George Bailey wishes he’d never been born, and his guardian angel Clarence shows him the flaw in that logic—has become a perennial source of inspiration for television writers. In one of the most recent It’s A Wonderful Life ...
